Unmet Need Scholarship

Open to families with a combined income of $30,000 or less, this program is intended to supplement financial aid packages that fall more than $1,000 short of students’ financial need. This scholarship is not designed as a substitute for aid provided by an institution.

The Unmet Need Scholarship program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are accepted or enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved, accredited institutions. Students must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) to be eligible to apply. Recipients will be selected based on financial need. Unmet Need Scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,800.

Applications will be available mid-January. Mark you calendars.  Download last year’s Unmet Need Scholarship Application so you can be prepared.

NAACP Legal Defense Fund

This $2,000 scholarship opportunity impresses me by ensuring that only serious students apply.  Please follow this link and carefully READ the application instructions.  They are taking applications now.   The scholarship requires correspondence (letter not email) and great thought.  Although the deadline is April 30, students should seriously aim for a March 30 completion date

NAACP Scholarships

The NAACP has three different scholarships available to student members.  Ambassador for Peace members and NAACP student workers should not let this opportunity slip away.

Download NAACP Scholarship Application .    At this time the application is from 06-07.  Students should take advantage of this extra time and prepare their documentation so scholarship application can be submitted immediately when new materials are posted

Marine Corps Scholarship Fund

Please read the eligibility requirements carefully.  If you have a father or grandfather in the Marines please check to see if you qualify.  You must satisfy service requirements, income requirements and the GPA requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be:  The son/daughter of one of the following:

  • An active duty or reserve U. S. Marine
  • A U.S. Marine who has received an Honorable Discharge, Medical Discharge, or was killed while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps
  • An active duty or reserve U.S. Navy Corpsman who is serving, or has served, with the U.S. Marine Corps
  • A U.S. Navy Corpsman who has served with the U.S. Marine Corps and has received an Honorable Discharge, Medical Discharge, or was killed while serving in the U.S. Navy

OR

The grandchild of one of the following:

  • A U.S. Marine who served with the 4th Marine Division during World War II and is/was a member of their association
  • A U.S. Marine who served with the 6th Marine Division during World War II and is/was a member of their association
  • A U.S. Marine who served in the 531 Gray Ghost Squadron and is/was a member of their association

AND

A high school graduate, or registered as an undergraduate student at an accredited college or post high school vocational/technical institution (Scholarship awards are not available for graduate study.)

AND

The eligible applicant has a maximum family adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less. The limit increases by $10,000 if an applicant’s sibling also applies. For the purpose of determining eligibility, non-taxable allowances received by military members on active duty are NOT included in determining adjusted gross income. This income limit requirement is waived for any applicant whose parent was killed in combat in the Global War on Terror.

AND

GPA is at least 2.0.

For the 2008-2009 academic year, the submission deadlines are March 3, 2008 for high school seniors graduating in 2008, and April 15, 2008 for all other applicants (anyone who has already graduated from high school).

Life Lesson Essay Contest

College bound students or students already in college who have lost a parent or guardian can enter an essay contest sponsored by LIFE insurance companies. 

The competition has not posted the 2008 application materials.  Deadline is traditionally around late April.

Inroads Internship

Are you planning a career in corporate America?  INROADS prepares rising college freshmen and sophomores to enter the corporate world.  Spend some time visiting the site.  Do you have what it takes?  Submit your application and prepare yourself for corporate America.

The program will be takin applications until March.

World Studio AIGA Scholarship

The professional association for design holds a design competition open to rising freshmen (high school seniors graduating in June) and upperclassmen enrolled in design programs.  The scholarship competition does not start until January but this is the time to get your material together.  Follow directions carefully.
